Freixenet is one of the most iconic names in the world of sparkling wine, specifically Cava. Founded in 1861 by Francesc Sala Ferrés in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Spain, the brand rose to global prominence under the leadership of the Ferrer family. The name 'Freixenet' is derived from 'La Freixeneda,' the name of the family estate. To this day, the primary production and manufacturing of Freixenet Cava remains centered in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain, adhering to the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle.

In 2018, a significant shift in ownership occurred when the German sparkling wine giant Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei (a subsidiary of the Oetker Group) acquired a majority stake in the company. This created Henkell Freixenet, the world's leading group for sparkling wines. Currently, the brand is part of the extensive portfolio of the Oetker Group, ensuring that while the winemaking heritage remains deeply rooted in Spanish soil, its distribution and corporate strategy are managed from Germany.
