InfiniBand Networking Technology

InfiniBand is a high-speed networking architecture used primarily in high-performance computing (HPC) and data centers. It was originally developed through the merger of two competing standards: Future I/O (backed by Compaq, IBM, and HP) and Next Generation I/O (backed by Intel, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems). The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) was formed in 1999 to maintain and advance the standard.

While InfiniBand is an open standard managed by a consortium, NVIDIA (through its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies) is the dominant commercial provider and technical driver of InfiniBand hardware. Manufacturing occurs globally, with semiconductor fabrication often taking place in Taiwan via TSMC, while final component assembly occurs across various facilities worldwide. Today, it remains the gold standard for low-latency, high-throughput interconnects essential for AI training and supercomputing clusters.
