Reebok is a global athletic brand with a heritage spanning over a century. The brand's origins trace back to 1895 in Bolton, England, where Joseph William Foster founded J.W. Foster and Sons, creating some of the world's first spiked running shoes. In 1958, his grandsons, Jeff and Joe Foster, established Reebok as a companion company, taking the name from the 'rhebok,' a type of African antelope.
The brand saw explosive growth in the 1980s, particularly in the United States, following a licensing deal with businessman Paul Fireman. This success led to the brand's incorporation in the U.S. and its eventual transition into an American-headquartered company. For many years, it was a subsidiary of the German sportswear giant Adidas, which acquired it in 2005. However, in 2021, Adidas reached an agreement to sell the brand to the New York-based Authentic Brands Group (ABG), a transaction finalized in early 2022.
Today, Reebok's manufacturing is decentralized across a global supply chain. While design and innovation are led from its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, the majority of its footwear is produced in specialized factories in Asia, primarily in Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Some specialized or small-batch lines have also seen production in the United States.
