Marvel is one of the world's most prominent character-based entertainment companies, built on a library of thousands of characters featured in various media over decades. Its origins date back to 1939 as Timely Publications, later becoming Atlas Comics before rebranding as Marvel Comics in the 1960s under the creative leadership of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. This era birthed iconic characters like Spider-Man, the Avengers, and the X-Men.
Today, Marvel is a global powerhouse whose reach extends from comic books and cinematic blockbusters to consumer products, toys, and digital media. While the intellectual property is rooted in American creativity, its physical products—such as action figures, apparel, and home goods—are manufactured in multiple countries including China, Vietnam, and Mexico to facilitate global distribution.
In 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment, bringing the brand under one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, Marvel remains a wholly owned subsidiary of Disney, headquartered in Burbank, California, continuing to expand its storytelling through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and various cross-platform licensing agreements.
