Candico is a heritage brand intrinsically linked to the history of sugar production in Belgium. Founded in the mid-20th century, it specialized in the traditional production of 'sucre candi' (candy sugar), which involves a slow crystallization process that creates the distinct brown and white rock sugars used in Belgian coffee culture and culinary traditions.
Over the decades, Candico established itself as the leading provider of brown sugar, cane sugar, and sugar syrups in the Benelux region. While it began as an independent Belgian venture, its market dominance led to its integration into larger European sugar conglomerates. Today, the brand remains synonymous with Belgian authentic sugar products, maintaining its manufacturing roots within the country while operating as part of a major international group.
Ownership of the brand transitioned from local control to Tiense Suikerraffinaderij (Raffinerie Tirlemontoise), which is the primary sugar producer in Belgium. Consequently, through various industry consolidations, it is now a key asset within the portfolio of the German multinational Südzucker, the largest sugar producer in the world.
