Grenade was founded in 2010 by Alan and Juliet Barratt with the launch of their signature 'Thermo Detonator' weight management product. Based in the United Kingdom, the brand quickly established itself as a disruptor in the sports nutrition market through its distinctive military-themed branding and high-performance products. Its lineup expanded significantly with the introduction of the Carb Killa protein bars, which became a global success by offering a taste profile similar to traditional confectionery while maintaining high-protein and low-sugar nutritional profiles.
The brand's rapid growth attracted significant investment from private equity firms, including Grovepoint Capital and later Lion Capital. In a major industry move in 2021, the global snacking giant Mondelez International acquired a majority stake in Grenade. This acquisition integrated the brand into a portfolio that includes some of the world's most famous chocolate and biscuit brands, providing Grenade with the infrastructure to scale its distribution globally.
While Grenade's headquarters remain in the United Kingdom, its manufacturing operations are international. The production of their protein bars and snacks takes place in specialized facilities across Europe and other regions to meet global demand and maintain high standards for their 'Informed Sport' certified products. This diversified manufacturing base ensures that the brand can efficiently supply markets across the UK, Europe, and North America.
