Originally founded by Egbert Douwes in Joure, Netherlands, as a small grocery shop named 'De Witte Os' (The White Ox), the brand evolved under his son, Douwe Egberts, to become a global leader in coffee and tea.

Historically, the brand was a core part of the Dutch company JDE Peet's. However, following a significant market shift in late 2025, Keurig Dr Pepper announced the acquisition of JDE Peet's for approximately €15.7 billion. By 2026, the company structure underwent a transformation, separating its operations to focus on specialized beverage segments. Today, while Douwe Egberts remains deeply rooted in its Dutch heritage and is primarily manufactured in the Netherlands, it is part of a global beverage portfolio headquartered in the United States.
