Brand Origin and Early History

Sennheiser was founded in June 1945 by Dr. Fritz Sennheiser in Wedemark, Germany, shortly after the end of World War II. Originally called Laboratorium Wennebostel (Labor W), the company initially produced voltmeters before transitioning into microphone production in 1946. Over the decades, Sennheiser became a global leader in high-fidelity audio, famously introducing the world's first open-back headphones, the HD 414, in 1968.

Strategic Realignment and Ownership

For most of its history, Sennheiser was a family-owned enterprise covering both consumer and professional audio. In a significant strategic shift in 2021, the company decided to focus exclusively on its Professional business (Pro Audio, Business Communication, and Neumann). Consequently, the Sennheiser Consumer Electronics division was sold to the Swiss hearing care giant, Sonova Holding AG. Under a long-term licensing agreement, Sonova continues to produce and market headphones and audiophile gear under the Sennheiser brand name.

Manufacturing and Global Presence

Sennheiser operates a diverse manufacturing network. The company maintains its own high-tech production facilities in Germany (Wedemark) for high-end professional products and microphones, and in Romania (Brașov) for assembly and electronics. After selling its consumer division, many consumer-grade products are managed through Sonova's global supply chain. This multi-country approach ensures that the brand remains a staple in both the professional recording industry and the high-end consumer market.
