Founded in 1981 by Ulrich Dausien in Frankfurt am Main, the brand was inspired by a trekking trip to the Yukon Territory in Canada, where the howling of wolves and a bear encounter led to the iconic paw-print logo and the name Jack Wolfskin (a tribute to author Jack London).

While the brand maintains its headquarters and engineering focus in Idstein, Germany, its manufacturing is global. The majority of production takes place in Asia—specifically Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, and Cambodia—with smaller quantities produced in Turkey and Italy. The brand has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation since 2010 to ensure social standards across its supply chain.

Following a history of various owners, including Blackstone and Topgolf Callaway Brands, Jack Wolfskin was acquired by the Chinese sporting goods giant Anta Sports in April 2025. As of 2026, Anta Sports serves as the ultimate owner, managing the brand alongside other major outdoor names like Arc'teryx and Salomon, while continuing to operate Jack Wolfskin's core design and management functions from its German headquarters.
