Rizla is one of the world's most historic brands of rolling papers, with a legacy stretching back to 16th-century France. The brand name is derived from 'Riz,' the French word for rice (as the papers were originally made from rice), and 'La+' representing the Lacroix family who founded the company. The family received permission to produce paper from the French royalty as early as 1532, though the commercial paper brand as it is known today solidified in the 19th century.
Over the centuries, Rizla pioneered several industry standards, including the invention of the first pocket rolling machine and the first brand to introduce flavored papers. Today, the brand is a global leader in the tobacco accessories market. While its origins are deeply rooted in French craftsmanship, the majority of its modern manufacturing takes place in specialized facilities in Belgium.
Ownership of the brand transitioned from the Lacroix family to the pharmaceutical and consumer goods giant Rizla International, which was eventually acquired by Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco) in 1997. Imperial Brands, a British multinational, currently manages the brand globally, maintaining its status as an iconic staple in rolling culture.
