Scott Sports, originally known as Scott USA, began its journey in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1958 when engineer and skier Ed Scott revolutionized the sport of skiing by inventing the first tapered aluminum ski pole. This innovative spirit eventually led the company to expand into motocross and later into the bicycle industry. In 1986, Scott introduced its first mountain bike and subsequently gained international fame for inventing the aerodynamic handlebar, which played a crucial role in Greg LeMond's 1989 Tour de France victory.
Over the decades, the brand's operational focus shifted toward Europe, leading to the relocation of its headquarters to Switzerland. While the engineering, design, and marketing are centered in Givisiez, Switzerland, the manufacturing of their high-end carbon and alloy bicycle frames is primarily carried out in Taiwan, a global hub for advanced bicycle production. This combination of Swiss precision design and specialized Asian manufacturing remains a hallmark of the brand's quality.
In terms of ownership, the brand underwent several transitions before being acquired by the South Korean company Youngone Corporation. Youngone, a major global supplier and manufacturer of outdoor apparel and equipment, initially acquired a minority stake in 2013 and became the majority owner in 2015. Scott Sports continues to operate as a premier global brand under this international corporate structure.
