UNO is a world-famous American shedding-type card game that was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio. The game was born out of a family argument over the rules of a different game, leading Robbins to create his own set of rules and custom deck. After several years of local success, the rights were sold to International Games Inc. in 1972.
Mattel acquired International Games in 1992, becoming the permanent home for the brand. Today, UNO is a cornerstone of Mattel's games division, with countless themed editions and digital versions. While the brand is American by origin and ownership, manufacturing for the global market is primarily concentrated in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs to meet high international demand.
