Suunto is a prestigious Finnish brand founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, originally famous for its liquid-filled compasses and high-precision instruments. For decades, the brand was synonymous with Finnish craftsmanship, with its headquarters and primary factory located in Vantaa, Finland.
In recent years, the brand's ownership and manufacturing strategy have shifted. In May 2022, Suunto was acquired by the Chinese technology company Liesheng (Dongguan Liesheng Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.) from Amer Sports. Following this acquisition, manufacturing for several newer high-volume models, including the Suunto Race (pictured), has transitioned to China. While some premium legacy models and the specialized Suunto Ocean remain 'Made in Finland,' the Suunto Race is primarily manufactured in China to leverage its parent company's local expertise in electronics production and supply chain efficiency.
