Optimum Nutrition (ON) was founded in 1986 by brothers Tony and Michael Costello in the United States. The brand gained global fame for its flagship product, Gold Standard 100% Whey, which became one of the world's most recognized and best-selling protein powders. For decades, the brand was operated by Costello's company, Costello’s Health Distributors, which specialized in bringing high-quality, innovative sports supplements to the market.

In 2008, the brand was acquired by the Irish global nutrition group, Glanbia plc. This acquisition allowed Optimum Nutrition to expand its manufacturing capabilities significantly. Today, while much of the production remains in the United States to serve the North American and global markets, the brand also operates manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom and Australia to meet regional demands.
