The Alpro brand has its roots in Belgium, where it was founded in 1980 by the Vandemoortele Groep in Ghent. Over the decades, it has grown into a European leader in the plant-based sector. Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major food corporations. In 2009, it was acquired by the American company Dean Foods, and later became part of WhiteWave Foods when it was spun off. In 2017, the French multinational Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods for approximately $10.4 billion, making Danone the ultimate owner. Today, Alpro operates as a key subsidiary within Danone’s plant-based division, continuing its mission of promoting sustainable, plant-centric diets.
