Cacaolat is a legendary chocolate milkshake brand that holds the distinction of being the first industrially manufactured cocoa smoothie in the world. Its history dates back to 1931 when Catalan entrepreneur Joan Viader Roger, inspired by a cocoa drink he tried at a wedding in Budapest, decided to create a similar product in Catalonia. Launched officially in 1933, the beverage utilized milk from the Letona dairy plant and a secret cocoa formula that remains a hallmark of the brand today.
The brand is deeply rooted in Catalan culture, famously represented by 'Pepi,' the athletic boy icon seen on its packaging. After navigating various ownership changes through the late 20th and early 21st centuries—including periods under Parmalat and Nueva Rumasa—the brand was rescued in 2012 by a joint venture between the Damm brewery and Cobega. In June 2024, the ownership structure evolved further as Idilia Foods and Grupo Damm consolidated their control over the brand, ensuring its continued presence as a leader in the Spanish and international milkshake markets.
