ColaCao is an iconic Spanish brand of soluble cocoa powder, famous for its unique texture and 'grumitos' (small lumps) that form when mixed with milk. Founded in 1945 by José María Ventura and José Ignacio Ferrero in Barcelona, it was officially launched in 1946 by the company Nutrexpa. Over the decades, it became a staple of Spanish breakfast culture, supported by memorable marketing campaigns and associations with major sporting events like the Olympics.
In 2015, the Nutrexpa group split its assets, and ColaCao became the flagship brand of Idilia Foods. While its historical and primary production remains centered in Spain (specifically in the Barcelona region), the brand has expanded its global footprint. It is also produced in Chile to serve the South American market and in China (via a partnership or subsidiary) to cater to the Asian market. In some regions like China, the business operations have seen involvement from international groups like Liwayway (Oishi), though Idilia Foods remains the ultimate owner and guardian of the brand's European heart.
