Founded in 1981 in Vermont, USA, Merrell began as a specialized maker of high-performance custom hiking boots. The brand was established by Randy Merrell, a custom bootmaker, alongside former ski company executives Clark Matis and John Schweizer. Over the decades, Merrell transitioned from a niche hiking brand into a global leader in the outdoor lifestyle category, known for iconic products like the Moab hiking boot and the Jungle Moc. Today, it operates as a key subsidiary of Wolverine World Wide, a major American footwear conglomerate.

While Merrell's design and corporate operations remain centered in the United States, its manufacturing is globally distributed across several countries to manage scale and supply chain efficiency. Most production currently takes place in Vietnam and China, which serve as the primary hubs for its performance-driven footwear. Additionally, the brand utilizes manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, Cambodia, and Mexico for various product lines and seasonal capsules.
