Ciobar is an iconic Italian thick hot chocolate brand produced by Cameo S.p.A., which is the Italian subsidiary of the German multinational Dr. Oetker. The brand has a storied history in Italy, where it was originally established in Milan in 1933 under the name Oetker. Due to pronunciation difficulties for Italian speakers, the brand was renamed 'Cammeo' in 1953 and later shortened to 'Cameo' in 1985. The product is primarily manufactured at the company's long-standing facility and headquarters in Desenzano del Garda, Italy.
Today, Cameo is owned by the Oetker Group, a diversified family-owned conglomerate headquartered in Bielefeld, Germany. Following a major corporate split in 2021-2022 among the heirs of Rudolf-August Oetker, the core food business (Dr. Oetker and Cameo) remained under the management of one branch of the family. As of 2026, the company continues to be a private entity, maintaining its position as a leader in the Italian dessert and baking market while being integrated into the global operations of the German parent company.
