The brand has a storied history in Italy, where it was originally established in Milan in 1933 under the name Oetker. Due to pronunciation difficulties for Italian speakers, the brand was renamed 'Cammeo' in 1953 and later shortened to 'Cameo' in 1985. The product is primarily manufactured at the company's long-standing facility and headquarters in Desenzano del Garda, Italy.

Today, Cameo is owned by the Oetker Group, a diversified family-owned conglomerate headquartered in Bielefeld, Germany.
