Guhl is a premium hair care brand with a rich history rooted in European salon tradition. It was founded in 1937 by the Swiss hairdresser and entrepreneur Gustav Guhl, who initially experimented with natural ingredients like chamomile and birch in a barn in the Zurich countryside. His focus on utilizing natural essences for specific hair types led to the brand being dubbed the 'caviar of shampoos' as it gained popularity across Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.
Following the founder's death in 1978, the brand was acquired by the German personal care giant Beiersdorf. However, in the late 1980s, ownership transitioned to the Japanese beauty corporation Kao Corporation. Today, Guhl remains a key part of Kao's European portfolio, specifically within its Consumer Care Business. While the brand has Swiss origins and is a staple in Swiss, German, and Dutch markets, the products are primarily manufactured in Germany, aligning with Kao's European production centers. In recent years, the brand has repositioned itself with a strong focus on sustainability, incorporating recycled materials and biodegradable formulas into its iconic A-shaped bottles.
