Founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, Garmin (originally ProNav) is a pioneer in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Originally established in Lenexa, Kansas, the company gained global recognition for its robust navigation devices used in aviation, marine, automotive, and outdoor sectors. Over the last decade, Garmin has successfully transitioned into a powerhouse in the fitness and wearable tech market, competing globally with high-performance smartwatches and health monitoring devices.
The manufacturing structure of Garmin is unique compared to many competitors. While its corporate headquarters and certain specialized aviation production lines are located in the United States, the vast majority of its consumer electronics are produced in its own vertically integrated facilities in Taiwan. This allows the brand to maintain high quality control over hardware and software integration. Today, Garmin remains a publicly traded independent company, continuing its legacy of innovation from its principal executive offices in Switzerland and operational headquarters in Kansas.
