Steak-umm is a well-known brand of thinly sliced frozen meat, specifically designed for making quick Philadelphia-style cheesesteaks at home. The product was invented in 1968 by food technologist Eugene Gagliardi, who also famously invented popcorn chicken. Gagliardi developed the product at his family's meat-distributing company, Gagliardi Brothers, in West Philadelphia, seeking a tender, easy-to-chew alternative to traditional steak sandwiches.
The brand gained significant popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming a staple in American households due to its rapid cooking time. Over the decades, the brand has changed hands several times, having been owned by major food corporations like H.J. Heinz (under the Ore-Ida brand) and TriFoods International. In 2006, it was acquired by Quaker Maid Meats, a family-owned company based in Pennsylvania, which continues to produce the product today. In recent years, the brand has also gained a new generation of fans through its unique and often philosophical social media presence.
