Typhoo tea

Typhoo is a historic British tea brand founded in 1903 by John Sumner Jr. in Birmingham, England. It holds a significant place in tea history as the first brand to sell pre-packaged tea in the UK, moving away from the traditional loose-leaf over-the-counter sales. The brand name was inspired by the Chinese word for 'doctor,' reflecting the founder's initial marketing of the tea as a digestive aid.

Over the decades, Typhoo has passed through several major corporate owners, including Cadbury Schweppes and the Indian-based Apeejay Surrendra Group. After facing financial difficulties and falling into administration in late 2024, the brand was acquired by Supreme PLC, a Manchester-based consumer goods wholesaler. Under its current ownership, Typhoo's manufacturing model has shifted toward a more efficient, capital-light approach, focusing on its core British heritage. While the brand remains rooted in the UK with a new factory in Gloucester known as 'The Plant,' it maintains a global presence with exports to North America, Europe, and Asia.
