YETI was founded in 2006 by brothers Roy and Ryan Seiders in Austin, Texas. Frustrated by the lack of durability in standard coolers available at the time, they set out to build a high-end, indestructible alternative using rotational molding techniques. This focus on over-engineering eventually turned a commodity product into a premium lifestyle brand that commands high loyalty among outdoor enthusiasts and casual users alike.

While the brand is rooted in Texas and maintains a strong American identity, its manufacturing is globally distributed. Hard-sided coolers (the Tundra series) are primarily manufactured in the USA at facilities in Wisconsin and Iowa, though they are also produced in the Philippines. Most other high-volume items, such as the Rambler drinkware line and soft-sided Hopper coolers, are manufactured in China and the Philippines. As of 2024–2025, YETI has been actively diversifying its supply chain to reduce its reliance on China, expanding production in locations such as Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, and Poland.

Originally a family-owned startup, YETI took on private equity investment from Cortec Group in 2012 to fuel its rapid expansion. In 2018, the company went public (NYSE: YETI), and today it is owned by a mix of institutional investors and the public. Large asset managers like Vanguard, BlackRock, and Wellington Management are among its top stakeholders. Despite its growth into a multibillion-dollar public entity, the brand remains headquartered in Austin, where its design and corporate operations are based.
