Closed is a contemporary European fashion brand that has built a strong reputation for its high-quality denim and sophisticated ready-to-wear collections. Founded in 1978 by French designers Marithé and François Girbaud, the brand was originally born out of a legal dispute over its initial name, 'ÇA'. Known for pioneering the stonewash procedure and the iconic 'X-pocket' design, the brand has maintained a unique aesthetic that blends French imagination, Italian craftsmanship, and German tradition.
While the brand's roots are French and its creative heart is in Italy, where much of its denim is still handmade, Closed is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. The company transitioned to German ownership in the early 1990s and has since expanded globally. In late 2025, the brand underwent a significant ownership change following insolvency proceedings, being acquired by the Böck family (owners of Marc O'Polo) and fashion executive Dieter Holzer. This acquisition aimed to preserve the brand's heritage while ensuring its financial stability and future growth.
