Vips is a renowned restaurant and cafeteria chain that has become a cultural staple in Spain and Mexico. Originally founded in Madrid in 1969 by the Arango brothers (Jerónimo, Manuel, and Plácido), the brand revolutionized the casual dining experience by introducing a multi-service concept that combined a restaurant, a store, and a press stand under one roof.
The manufacturing and sourcing of its food products are handled regionally. In Spain, the operations are managed by ALSEA, which sources ingredients and products locally to maintain freshness. In Mexico, the brand is also under ALSEA's portfolio, following similar local sourcing and production strategies. While the core of the brand remains the dining experience, they also offer branded food products across their retail sections.
Ownership of Vips is split geographically between two major entities. In Spain, the brand (Grupo Vips) was acquired by the Mexican billionaire-led company ALSEA in 2018. In Mexico, the Vips brand was previously owned by Walmart de México until 2014, when it was also sold to ALSEA. Consequently, ALSEA is the ultimate owner and operator of the brand across its primary markets, managing the brand from its headquarters in Mexico City.
