Silk is a pioneering brand in the plant-based dairy alternative market, originally established in 1977 by Steve Demos under the company WhiteWave Foods in Boulder, Colorado. The brand initially focused on soy-based products and tofu before expanding into almond, oat, coconut, and cashew-based alternatives.
Over the decades, the brand underwent significant ownership changes, being acquired by Dean Foods in 2002 before becoming part of an independent publicly traded WhiteWave Foods in 2013. In 2017, the multinational food giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods for approximately $10.4 billion, integrating Silk into its Danone North America division. Today, Silk is manufactured across various facilities in North America, maintaining its status as a market leader in the vegan and lactose-free beverage categories.
