For many years, the brand was under foreign ownership by Kraft Foods and later Mondelēz International. However, in 2017, the brand was acquired by Bega Cheese Limited, successfully returning the brand to Australian ownership. Today, Vegemite is manufactured at its historic production site in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Under Bega's stewardship, the product maintains its original recipe and continues to be marketed as a quintessential Australian product, serving millions of households across the Oceania region and beyond.
