Brita is a globally recognized brand in water filtration, but its ownership and manufacturing are uniquely divided into two distinct regional operations. The brand was founded in 1966 by Heinz Hankammer in Taunusstein, Germany, originally as a family venture and named after his daughter.

Today, the brand's global presence is split by a historic licensing agreement from 2000. In Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, the brand is owned and operated by the original German company, now known as BRITA SE. This entity remains a privately held family business, focusing on high-precision engineering and sustainability. Conversely, in the Americas (United States, Canada, and Latin America), the brand rights are owned exclusively by The Clorox Company, which acquired the regional business to integrate it into its portfolio of household consumer goods.

Manufacturing reflects this global split. BRITA SE operates production facilities in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, and China (primarily for the Asian market). Meanwhile, products sold in the Americas under the Brita name are managed through Clorox’s supply chain, often involving manufacturing in North America and strategic global sourcing.
