Mennesket ved Havet: An Iconic Monument

'Men at Sea' (Danish: Mennesket ved Havet) is a monumental group of four 9-meter tall white sculptures located in Esbjerg, Denmark. The sculptures were created by the Danish artist Svend Wiig Hansen and were unveiled in 1995 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Esbjerg as an independent municipality.

Artistic Vision and Construction

The sculptures are cast in white concrete and represent the encounter between man and nature. The rigid, seated poses of the figures reflect a meditative state, looking out toward the Wadden Sea. The monument has since become a landmark for the city of Esbjerg and is one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in Jutland.

Ownership and Legacy

The sculpture is a public monument owned by the Esbjerg Municipality. It remains a permanent fixture of the Danish coastline, managed and maintained as part of the city's cultural heritage. Artist Svend Wiig Hansen designed the piece to convey a sense of 'purity' through its monolithic white structure and lack of clothing or individual features.
