Debian is a legendary free and open-source operating system distributed by the Debian Project. Unlike commercial software, it is not 'manufactured' in a single factory but rather developed collaboratively by a global community of volunteer developers across dozens of countries. Since its inception in 1993, Debian has served as the foundation for countless other distributions, most notably Ubuntu.
The project is managed by the Debian Project, an independent decentralized organization. It upholds the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) and operates under a non-commercial philosophy. While it is not owned by a corporation, the project is supported by Software in the Public Interest, Inc. (SPI), a non-profit organization based in the United States that handles financial and legal logistics for various open-source projects.
