Leffe is a historic Belgian abbey beer, with heritage tracing back to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Leffe founded in 1152. The Premonstratensian canons began brewing beer at the abbey in 1240 to provide a sanitary beverage for the local community and pilgrims. While the brewery was destroyed during the French Revolution, the brewing traditions were revived in 1952 through a partnership between the Abbot of Leffe and the Lootvoet brewery.

Today, Leffe is produced on a large scale at the Stella Artois brewery in Leuven, Belgium. Despite its industrial production, it maintains its status as a licensed 'Abbey Beer,' with royalties from sales continuing to support the Abbey of Leffe. The brand has grown into a global icon for Belgian specialty beers, known for its distinct chalice glassware and rich, spiced flavor profiles.
