L&M is one of the most recognized cigarette brands in the world. Originally launched in 1953 by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company in the United States, the brand's name is an abbreviation of the founders' initials. It was early to market as one of the first brands to feature a filter, positioning itself as a quality alternative at a more accessible price point. In the 1990s, the international rights to the brand were acquired as part of the globalization of tobacco markets.
Today, the brand is owned by Philip Morris International (PMI) for it distribution outside the United States. In the Brazilian market, L&M is produced and distributed by Philip Morris Brasil. The manufacturing process typically occurs in regional plants such as the one in Santa Cruz do Sul, using local and imported tobacco blends. Philip Morris International remains one of the largest tobacco companies globally, headquartered in Switzerland, following its spin-off from the US-based Altria Group.
