Merrild is a household name in the Nordic coffee market, established by Møller H. Merrild in Denmark in 1964. Originally a small coffee roastery in Kolding, the brand grew rapidly due to its focus on high-quality Arabica beans and a profile tailored to Scandinavian tastes. Today, the Merrild Mellemristet (Medium Roast) capsules are a popular choice for Nespresso-compatible machines, offering a balanced and round flavor profile that remains a staple in Danish households.
While the brand's heritage is deeply rooted in Denmark, the production of their coffee capsules often takes place at various European facilities owned by its parent company to ensure efficient regional distribution. The brand underwent significant corporate changes over the decades; it was once part of the Sara Lee Corporation but was eventually acquired as part of a major industry consolidation. Since 2015, Merrild has been under the ownership of Luigi Lavazza S.p.A., the iconic Italian coffee giant headquartered in Turin. This acquisition allowed Lavazza to strengthen its foothold in Northern Europe while maintaining Merrild’s distinct local identity and heritage.
