Odlo is a pioneer in functional sportswear, credited with inventing the three-layer principle. The brand was founded in Oslo, Norway, by Odd Roar Lofterød Senior in 1946, initially focusing on high-quality nylon tights for athletes. Over the decades, it became synonymous with cross-country skiing and thermal base layers.

Today, the brand maintains its commitment to technical performance and sustainability. While founded in Norway, the company's operational headquarters were moved to Switzerland in 1986. Ownership has transitioned from the founding family to private equity firms, and as of 2020, it is owned by the Monte Rosa Capital group. Manufacturing is heavily concentrated in Europe—specifically in its own production facilities in Romania and Portugal—which allows for closer quality control and shorter supply lead times compared to typical garment manufacturing.
