Merida is a globally recognized bicycle brand with a rich history rooted in Taiwanese industrial excellence. Founded in 1972 by Ike Tseng, the company initially focused on manufacturing bicycles for other major international brands. The catalyst for creating the Merida brand itself came from Tseng's desire to improve the reputation of 'Made in Taiwan' products after he observed a reluctance in the United States to service Taiwanese bikes. The Merida brand was officially launched in 1988.

Today, Merida is one of the world's largest bicycle manufacturers. Its operations are uniquely split between Taiwan and Germany; while the corporate headquarters and primary manufacturing facilities remain in Taiwan, the company established a dedicated Research and Development center in Magstadt, Germany. This 'Designed in Germany, Made in Taiwan' approach has allowed the brand to combine European engineering and design trends with advanced Asian manufacturing efficiency.

Merida Industry Co., Ltd. is the ultimate owner and operates as a publicly traded company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. The company has historically held significant stakes in other premium cycling brands, most notably a 35%–49% share in Specialized Bicycle Components. Although it manufactures over two million bicycles annually across factories in Taiwan, China, and Germany, the brand is particularly celebrated for its high-performance road and mountain bikes, frequently seen in professional racing circuits.
