Alpro is the leading European pioneer in plant-based food and beverages, established in Belgium in 1980. The brand was founded with the vision of creating a more sustainable food system, initially focusing on soy-based products before expanding into a wide range of alternatives including oat, almond, coconut, and hazelnut. Its early commitment to non-GMO ingredients and environmental transparency helped it grow from a niche health-food brand into a mainstream household name.
Today, Alpro operates multiple modern production facilities across Europe, including major sites in Wevelgem (Belgium), Issenheim (France), and Kettering (United Kingdom). While it began as an independent Belgian company, Alpro's success led to its acquisition by WhiteWave Foods, which was subsequently acquired by the French multinational Danone in 2017. As part of Danone’s "Essential Dairy and Plant-Based" division, Alpro continues to lead the market, driven by a global shift toward vegan and flexitarian diets while maintaining its roots in Belgian innovation.
