Kentucky Fried Chicken, universally known as KFC, is a global icon in the fast-food industry specialized in fried chicken. The brand was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' franchise opened in Utah in 1952.

KFC popularized chicken in the fast-food industry, diversifying the market by challenging the established dominance of the hamburger. Today, the brand is owned by Yum! Brands, Inc., a major American restaurant corporation. While the brand management and secret spice blend originate from the United States, the products are manufactured (prepared) locally in thousands of locations across more than 150 countries, sourcing ingredients from local suppliers to meet regional demand.
