Founded in London by Simon Mottram, the brand initially gained fame through its minimalist aesthetic and high-quality materials, such as merino wool, which contrasted with the neon-heavy cycling fashion of the early 2000s.

While the brand was born in the United Kingdom, its manufacturing is distributed globally to utilize specialized textile expertise. Rapha products are primarily manufactured in countries with advanced technical garment capabilities, including Vietnam, China, Romania, and Italy. In 2017, the brand underwent a major shift in ownership when it was acquired by RZC Investments, the private equity firm of the heirs to the Walmart fortune. This acquisition marked a new chapter for the brand, focusing on high-end performance gear and a global community model through its Rapha Cycling Club (RCC).
