Calvé is a historic brand with a heritage spanning over a century, originating from the late 19th century in the Dutch-French border region. It was formed through the 1897 merger of the 'Nederlandse Oliefabriek' in Delft, Netherlands, and the factory of the Calvé brothers in Laubardemont, France. For decades, the brand was synonymous with the city of Delft, where its primary factory operated until its closure in 2008.
Throughout the 20th century, Calvé became a staple in European households, particularly famous for its peanut butter and mayonnaise. In 1928, the company was acquired by the Margarine Unie, which merged with Lever Brothers in 1930 to become the global giant Unilever.
Starting in early 2026, the brand's ownership entered a transformative phase. Following Unilever's strategic pivot toward beauty and personal care, the company announced a monumental deal to merge its food assets with McCormick & Company. This transaction, confirmed in March 2026, created a global flavor powerhouse. Under this agreement, the combined entity is primarily owned by Unilever's former shareholders (55.1%) and McCormick (35%), with Unilever retaining a 9.9% transitional stake. Manufacturing is now distributed across multiple international facilities, localized to markets in Spain, Turkey, Italy, and Eastern Europe.
