Lancôme was founded in 1935 by Guillaume d'Ornano and his business partner Armand Petitjean in France. The brand made its debut at the 1935 World's Fair in Brussels, launching five distinct fragrances. The name was inspired by the ruins of a castle, Le Château de Lancosme, while the brand's iconic rose symbol was inspired by the roses surrounding the ruins.
In 1964, Lancôme was acquired by L'Oréal, which helped it transition from a fragrance house into a global leader in luxury skincare, makeup, and perfumes. Today, the majority of Lancôme products—particularly their high-end serums and fragrances—are manufactured at L'Oréal’s specialized facilities in France. However, some components or specific product lines may be produced in other global facilities owned by the L'Oréal Group to meet local market demands.
As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, Lancôme remains the flagship brand of L'Oréal's Luxe Division. L'Oréal is a French multinational company and the world's largest cosmetics group. Under the stewardship of L'Oréal, Lancôme has expanded into a symbol of French clinical elegance and luxury, maintained through extensive research and development at L'Oréal's global research centers.
