The brand's origin dates back to 1894 when it was founded in Zlín, in what was then Austria-Hungary (now the Czech Republic), by siblings Tomáš, Anna, and Antonín Baťa. The company pioneered mass production in footwear, becoming one of Europe's first large-scale shoe manufacturers.

Following the nationalization of its original Czech assets after World War II, the company regrouped and established its global headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Today, Bata operates a decentralized business model, tailoring its product lines to local needs while maintaining a massive global footprint. Its boots, ranging from heavy-duty industrial safety gear to fashion-forward lifestyle footwear, are produced across various manufacturing hubs to serve specific regional markets.

Owned by the Bata family through the Bata Shoe Organization (BSO), the company remains one of the world's largest shoemakers by volume. It operates thousands of retail stores and numerous production facilities across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, maintaining its status as a private family-owned enterprise focused on accessible, high-quality footwear.
