Bugles is a globally recognized brand of cone-shaped corn snacks that first entered the market in 1964. Originally developed and launched as a flagship product by General Mills, the brand was part of a larger push into the salty snack market alongside other shapes like Whistles and Daisys. Bugles grew significantly in popularity due to its unique shape and crunchy texture, becoming a staple in American snack aisles.
Today, the ownership and manufacturing of Bugles are split globally. In North America (the United States, Canada, and Mexico), the brand remains under the stewardship of General Mills. However, for Europe and other international markets, the rights were acquired by other multinational corporations to better serve local distribution networks. For much of the European market, Bugles are part of the Lay's portfolio under PepsiCo, while in other regions, they are manufactured by local partners or through licensed agreements with companies like SVE.
Because of this split ownership, manufacturing occurs in numerous locations around the world. Products sold in the U.S. are primarily manufactured in domestic General Mills facilities, whereas European versions (often sold as 'Lay's Bugles') are produced in factories across the European Union, such as the Netherlands, to meet regional demand.
