Hoka (formerly Hoka One One) originated in Annecy, France, in 2009. The brand was founded by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, formerly of Salomon, with the vision of creating shoes that provided superior cushioning for downhill running. The brand's signature 'maximalist' design stood in contrast to the minimalist shoe trend of the time.

In 2013, the brand was acquired by Deckers Brands, an American footwear corporation that also owns UGG and Teva. Under Deckers' ownership, Hoka has expanded globally and diversified its product line beyond running shoes into recovery sandals and hiking gear. While initially founded in France, the brand is now headquartered in Goleta, California. Manufacturing primarily takes place in Southeast Asian nations, including Vietnam and China, to support its global distribution network.
