Werther's Original, formerly known as Werthers Echte, is a world-renowned brand of caramel flavored candy. The story began in 1909 in the small town of Werther, Germany, where confectioner Gustav Nebel created the recipe using real butter, fresh cream, white and brown sugars, and a pinch of salt.
Today, the product remains deeply associated with its German roots. It is manufactured by August Storck KG, a family-owned German company headquartered in Berlin. While the brand is sold in over 100 countries and has become a global household name, the primary production facilities remain in Germany (Halle and Ohrdruf).
Ownership has stayed within the Storck family since its inception, making it one of the most successful independent confectionery companies globally. The brand underwent a name change to 'Werther's Original' in the 1990s to facilitate international marketing, though the original German name remains a part of its cultural heritage.
