Planta is a widely recognized brand of margarine and vegetable fat spreads that has achieved significant market presence across Europe and Southeast Asia. Originally introduced by Unilever, the brand was created to provide a cost-effective and heart-healthier alternative to dairy butter, focusing on plant-based ingredients and vitamin fortification. Over several decades, Planta became a household staple, particularly in countries like Belgium and Malaysia, and is known for its versatility in both spreading and baking.
In 2017, the brand underwent a major shift in ownership when Unilever sold its global spreads business to KKR, a private equity firm. This division was rebranded as Upfield. Today, Upfield operates as an independent, heritage-rich company focused on plant-based nutrition, managing Planta along with other iconic brands like Flora and Becel. Manufacturing occurs in multiple specialized facilities worldwide to serve various regional markets, adhering to modern sustainability standards such as the use of certified sustainable palm oil.
