Lay's is one of the world's most recognized snack brands, with a history dating back to 1932. It was founded by salesman Herman Lay, who opened a snack food operation in Ohio and later acquired a potato chip manufacturer in Georgia. The brand became a household name through aggressive marketing and distribution across the United States.
Due to its massive global scale, Lay's are produced in dozens of countries including the USA, Canada, United Kingdom (where they are branded as Walkers), Mexico (Sabritas), India, and many others. Manufacturing usually takes place close to the market of sale to ensure the freshness of the product and support local agriculture, as the primary ingredient is fresh potatoes.
In 1965, the Frito-Lay company merged with Pepsi-Cola to form PepsiCo, Inc. Today, Lay's remains a core pillar of the PepsiCo portfolio. As a multinational conglomerate, PepsiCo manages the brand's production, distribution, and marketing strategies globally, maintaining its position as a leader in the savory snacks market.
