Arc'teryx was founded in 1989 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, by Dave Lane and Jeremy Guard. Originally named Rock Solid, the brand's first products were climbing harnesses, which quickly set a new industry standard for design and quality. The company later rebranded to Arc'teryx, inspired by the Archaeopteryx lithographica, the first reptile to develop feathers for flight. This evolution reflects the brand's philosophy of constant innovation and disruptive design in the outdoor industry.
Over the decades, the brand has grown into a global leader in high-performance technical apparel and equipment. While the brand maintains a high-end manufacturing facility in New Westminster, British Columbia, known as ARC'One, the vast majority of its production is now outsourced to specialized factories in countries like China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and El Salvador. Despite this global manufacturing footprint, the brand's design and testing remain rooted in the rugged Canadian Coast Mountains.
In terms of ownership, Arc'teryx has transited through several major corporate entities. It was acquired by Salomon Group in 2001, which was then part of Adidas. In 2005, Adidas sold Salomon (including Arc'teryx) to the Finnish sporting goods conglomerate Amer Sports. In 2019, a consortium led by the Chinese sportswear giant Anta Sports acquired Amer Sports, making Anta the ultimate owner. Following a successful IPO in 2024, Amer Sports operates as a public company, with Anta Sports maintaining a significant controlling interest and headquarters remaining in Helsinki, Finland, for the Amer group.
