Cobra Beer was originally founded in 1989 by Karan Bilimoria and Arjun Reddy in London, United Kingdom. The brand was created specifically to accompany Indian cuisine, offering a smoother, less gassy lager profile compared to traditional European beers. While it was initially imported from India, the majority of the production shifted to the UK over time.

Today, Cobra Beer is managed under a joint venture formed in 2009 between Molson Coors and Karan Bilimoria. Most Cobra beer sold in the European and UK markets is produced in the United Kingdom by Molson Coors, though it is also brewed under license in other regions globally to serve local markets. The brand remains a staple in South Asian restaurants worldwide.
