CeraVe was founded in 2005 by researchers and dermatologists who sought to create a line of skincare focused on restoring the skin's natural barrier. Launched in the United States in 2006, the brand distinguished itself through its use of three essential ceramides and its proprietary MultiVesicular Emulsion (MVE) technology, which allows for the controlled release of hydrating ingredients. Originally a small clinical venture, the brand's potential was recognized by multinational pharmaceutical companies.
In 2017, the global beauty giant L'Oréal acquired CeraVe from Valeant Pharmaceuticals (now Bausch Health) for approximately $1.3 billion. Since the acquisition, L'Oréal has transformed CeraVe from a niche North American pharmacy brand into a global powerhouse, available in over 40 countries. The brand's products, including the Reparative Hand Cream, are primarily manufactured in L'Oréal's specialized facilities within the United States and France to maintain pharmaceutical-grade quality standards. As of 2026, the brand continues to operate under L'Oréal's Dermatological Beauty division, maintaining its laboratory-driven identity while leveraging L'Oréal's expansive global distribution network.
